HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

Shri. Shivaji Vidya Prasarak Sanstha’s Bhausaheb N.S. Patil Arts and Mulla Fidaali Mulla Abadulali Commerce College, Dhule, was established in June 1956 with a modest strength of about 100 students. Initially it was only an intermediate college of Arts faculty. S.S.V.P.Sanstha is the first of its kind in the entire region of Khandesh, established in the 1912 by a devoted and dedicated group of persons for imparting education to the weaker sections of the society at affordable price and place.

Dhule district is primarily a tribal district of Maharashtra which has been lagging much behind other districts in various fields in respect of progress. Right from the inception of S.S.V.P Sanstha, it had been a long cherished dream and sincere wish of our founding fathers that the students belonging to agrarian community and other weaker section of the society of Dhule district should get an opportunity to pursue their higher education in their district itself. At that time it was a sort of prerogative of the very few of the elite because higher education was available only at far off places like Bombay, Pune and Nasik. This was even well beyond the reach of the rich! Thus many a student from poor classes had to stop his education after Matriculation. Our Sanstha had been doing a yeoman’s service in the field of education since 1912 by opening a boarding house for poor and needy students and middle schools in later years. After having rendered such a selfless service to the society for four decades the golden moment of realizing the goal came in the history of our Sanstha in June 1956 .

On 2 June 1956 SSVP Sanstha’s Arts College was formally opened in the auspicious presence of the first Senior Wrangler of Maharashtra and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Pune, Dr.R.P Paranjpe. This occasion by distinguished scholar Dr.R.P.Paranjape spelled and ensured a steady and rapid growth of our Sanstha . From June 1957 Science wing was started for inter classes and in June 1958 Commerce faculty was opened.

Now with the passage of time the basic needs like building, permanent structures to accommodate increasing number of students also increased. To meet this need our Sanstha started construction of Main Building. Here again the Sanstha added a new feather in its cap by inviting the Finance Minister of India and the Chairman of U.G.C Dr.C.D.Deshmukh to lay the foundation Stone of this building. Thus it is a matter of great person of national stature had been the well-wishers, patrons and visitors not only in the initial stages but also in later formative years.

In 1960 a post-graduate course in Marathi was introduced and this was also the first of its kind in our district. Thus gradually SSVP Sanstha went on making rapid and impressive strides and can legitimately take pride in its varied achievements in the fields of curriculum and co-curricular activities.

The college soon developed into a full-fledged degree college by June 1960 imparting instructions for degree courses in Marathi , English, Sanskrit , Hindi ,Economics , Politics , at the special level and Ardhamagandhi , Urdu , Philosophy, Psychology , History, Geography and Sociology at the general level and Advanced Accounting and Auditing Cost-accounting and Banking as a special subjects for the B.Com Degree courses. Since then the Sanstha has been making arrangement for teaching more and more subjects as per necessities from time to time. Thus the college became a major hub of educational activities in Dhule District.

By this time the college had now separated into new two storied building whose foundation stone was laid by Dr. C. D. Deshmukh and inaugurated by the governor of Maharashtra Dr. Shri. Shriprakash , in addition to old godowns and other building donated along with a tract of land by our patron Mulla Fidaali Mulla Abdul Ali. Even today our Commerce faculty proudly bears his name. This was followed by construction of a Multipurpose building and Auditorium with a generous of Rs.35,000/- by the central Govt. and Sanstha’s own contribution of Rs.50,000/-. For the same purpose our students also made ‘Shram-Dan’ amounting about Rs.4,000/-. A grand inauguration function of Auditorium was held at the hands of the greatest leader of Maharashtra and the Chief Minister of the Bombay State, Hon’ble Yashwantrao Chavan. After this remarkable progress, new hostel building and other amenities were made available in the campus.

It took nearly a span of 10 years for the above mentioned steady progress of the college and now the year 1966 appeared on the horizon which brought some of the rarest memorable golden moments in the history of our sanstha, because it was the Golden Jubilee year of SSVP Sanstha. Indeed it has become a perpetual treasure of the pride and pleasure for all. This Golden Jubilee function was inaugurated by eminent scholar, philosopher and perhaps the greatest teacher and the President of India Dr.S.Radhakrushnan. The function was attended by a number of equally eminent and distinguished dignitaries like the Defence Minister of India Mr.Y.B.Chavan (President of the function) Governor of Maharashtra Dr. Cherian and Mrs. Tara Cherian ,Shri. Shankarrao Chavan , Shri.Madhukarrao Chaudhari , Shri. Digambarrao Padvi all Ministers of Maharashtra and our dedicated founder fathers. A mammoth gathering audience and spectators were simply overwhelmed with emotions by very inspiring words uttered by such a great galaxy of eminent persons on this occasion.

In the following year the Science faculty was bifurcated for the sake of administration. Now Science stream started functioning separately from this year. Thus SSVP Arts & Commerce College came separately into existence in 1967, by which time it had already become well-known for its remarkable growth and progress.

In this way the SSVP Sanstha’s Bhausaheb N.S.Patil Arts and Mulla Fidaali Mulla Abdulali Commerce college began its journey with a modest number of 156 students in 1956 and today it accommodates nearly 2500 students in highly conducive and cosmopolitan ambience, remaining, true to our Motto :

बहुजन हिताय , बहुजन सुखाय :!!
