The college was established in June 1956 under the management Shri Shivaji Vidya Prasarak Sanstha, Dhule which was affiliated to Poona University later in 1991 affiliated to Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maraharashtra University, Jalgaon.

The subject Geography was introduced first at S. Y. B. Sc. & S. Y. B. A., General level as subsidiary subject in 1964. Ours was the first college outside (at the time of Poona University) Pune city start Geography Subject at B. A. in 1970 and in 1971 as a Special Subject. The whole teaching and learning programme was carried out according to Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon.

Aims of Subject :

  • To understand the global system at the basic level
  • To enable to understand the natural and cultural phenomena which are related to earth surface and to use and interpret various types of maps.
  • At the graduate level it was also aimed to enable the students to understand aerial differentiation and the relationship between man and environment.
  • To identify the Geographical phenomena on Earth crust and hence it is essential to undertake excursion tours as field study.

Objectives :

  1. Practical knowledge to the students would be able to understand the cartographic techniques and statistical methods and represent the Geographical information by diagrams and maps.
  2. To create environmental awareness a need of modern and industrial time.
  3. To expertise student by providing knowledge about interview techniques and group discussion.

Working of the Department :

In order to achieve the aims and objects to teaching Geography Department has its own operational outline as under

  1. To calculate the Departmental Workload and distribute it amongst the staff members of Geography Department.
  2. To plan the curricular and co-curricular activities of the Department.
  3. To plan and visit to Geographical field work for observation of Geographical phenomena.
  4. To discuss the teaching strategies and take the review of the problems in any.
  5. To plan the curricular activities of Practical in Geography.
  6. To arrange the tests tutorial examination, discussion with the students to determine to performance of the students.
  7. To share the responsibilities allotted by college and university.

Main Areas of Academic Thrust :

Physical Geography, Human Geography, Population Geography, Political Geography, Environmental Geography, Regional Development and Planning, Social and Cultural Geography, Urban and Rural Settlement Geography, Disaster Management Geography, Global Position System, Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, Statistical Geography, Elements of Map Reading, Projection, Scale and Surveying, Map Making and Land Measurement.

The department also has a Geographical group to intensity Geographical knowledge, to inculcate interest and to develop observational skills in Geography. The Department has formation Geography Association in the start of the academic year. The meetings are held regularly before every activity done by the Geography Association. Teachers and Students participate in these meetings. It is a forum for departmental activities for students to present their skill work, practical, poster competition, Geography Day, General Knowledge, Welcome and Fair well Function etc. Through discussion also take place.

The Departmental Library contains collection of many books and journals. The Department has fully equipped Cartography Lab, Computer Lab, and Information Communication Technology Room, Survey Lab, GPS Lab, Topographical Map and much other essential equipment related to Geography Subject.

Departmental Activities :

The Department of Geography conduct classes up to under graduate level. In order to create the interest and motivate the students with regard to their participation in academic pursuits, it is planned to arrange activities such as:-

  1. Group discussion among the students on particular topic in the class.
  2. Lectures of invited eminent/scholar persons.
  3. Conducts Short or Long Excursion Tour as a particular work of the subject.
  4. Geography Day – 14th January celebrate as a Geography Day, on this day department conduct General Knowledge Examination on Geography.
  5. Exhibition – 21st March, 22nd September and 21st/ 23rd December etc. Department organized Exhibition.
  6. Welcome Function: T. Y. B. A. Geography special students gave a warm welcome to S. Y. B. A.  Students offering Geography as a special subject.
  7. Short or Long Excursion Tour as a part of Practical Geography. Department organized short or Long Excursion Tour during the academic year.
